The St. Petersburg Conservancy:
Preserving A City's Heritage

A portion of the Mikhailovsky Fence, partially restored by The St. Petersburg Conservancy

St. Petersburg faces the challenge today of regaining the luster of its extraordinary cultural life—one that has spanned more than three hundred years. Its story is told in its literature, its music, and above all its architecture. Russia’s once imperial capital is a city of a thousand pastel palaces and historic footbridges arching over romantic canals. Despite war, revolution, and neglect, St. Petersburg has never lost its magic.

A new global awareness of the importance of urban culture has emerged, especially after recent events of terror and destruction. The restoration and preservation of faraway treasures is becoming a necessary enrichment of our own lives—and the responsibility of our generation.

THE ST. PETERSBURG CONSERVANCY

Since its founding in 1990, the St. Petersburg Conservancy [formerly the Fabergé Arts Foundation (FAF)], has been dedicated to preserving the city’s cultural heritage. In recent years SPC has principally undertaken restoration projects, while working closely with Russian and International partners to organize art exhibitions in St. Petersburg, Paris, London, and Washington, DC; publish books; establish exchange programs; and found professional societies.

The St. Petersburg Conservancy has partnered with the city’s leadership to identify restoration projects of historical significance, raising awareness and funds for these projects, and managing the restoration process.
